Men's Footwear: Now in Technicolor

Men may claim that they don’t care about fashion, but way deep down, every man wants to look his best. And this spring, only the most fashion-forward men will be stepping out in bright, bold footwear.

Men's fashions are about to get a whole lot brighter.
If you’ve ever been shoe shopping with a man, you may have noticed that men’s footwear options are a bit different from ours. Women are often granted the option of selecting from a myriad of styles in a rainbow of prints and whimsical color palettes. And while men do have many style options to choose from, their color choices are extremely limited. They must often grapple between two very basic options: black or brown.

But this spring men’s footwear designers like Cole Haan, Florsheim, and Christian Louboutin, are breathing a little bit of color into their collections. Colors with a definite look-at-me edge, such as red, yellow, and even pink are popping up in styles that range from oxfords to wing tips. Fear not, the classic black and brown options aren’t sinking back forever into the night; they’ll just be keeping a different sort of company this season.

The sudden burst of color has grown out of the athletic shoe industry, where bright uppers, soles, and shoelaces are quite common. Styles like the NikeiD even allow men to customize their sneakers with any color palette imaginable.

But men don’t need to dive in feet first into this new trend. If an allover bright red oxford is a bit too much to handle, they can ease into the trend with perhaps a snazzy pair of Cole Haan wing tips that feature a more muted upper and a brightly colored sole.
